Populations are numerous in large, windswept natural lakes of moderate to low clarity. Walleyes prefer clean hard bottoms and water temperature from 65 to 75 degrees. Casting, drifting, trolling and even downrigging can be effective techniques in fishing the walleye and once a school has been located the action can last for some time. The scientific name is " Stizostedion Vitreum " The most notable features of the walleye are the large smokey eyes which give them the appearance of blindness, hence the name. The sharp spines of the dorsal fin and the distinctively white underbelly are also noted features of the species.
