Walleye Fishing Guide
|
|
Walleye is a popular game fish in Nunavut in both the summer and winter.
Walleye and Northern Pike are only found in the south western-most
corner of Nunavut, below the treeline in the lakes that border Saskatchewan
and Manitoba. Walleye generally run up to 2.3 kg (9.5 lbs) and are
easiest to fish in the spring when they are running in the rivers.
Pike generally run between 2.3-6.8 kg (5-15 lbs), however pike
weighing in at 30 to 40 lbs have been taken.
Strong
fighters, walleyes stay deep and wage a determined battle. In
most northern waters the walleye feeds most actively at sunrise and
sunset and night fishing can be very productive. The larger, mature
fish will come into shallow rock shoals and around islands to feed
and many trophys have been taken still or drift fishing. Walleyes
prefer clean hard bottoms and water temperature from 65 to 75 degrees.
Casting, drifting, trolling and even downrigging can be effective
techniques in fishing the walleye. Walleye will respond to a wide
range of natural and artificial bait with live minnows and weighted
jigs. Canadian
Record: 22 lbs. 4 ounces.
