NWT Walleye Fishing Guide

Walleye

Walleye are a popular game fish in the Northwest Territories in both the summer and winter. Walleye are found in the Mackenzie River watershed as far north as the delta. They are often plentiful in tributary streams of Great Slave Lake where they spawn and are sometimes found feeding throughout the summer. They are also plentiful in some inland lakes and rivers. The meat is excellent and the highlight of any walleye trip is enjoying a famous shore lunch.

Strong fighters, walleyes stay deep and wage a determined battle. In most northern waters the walleye feeds most actively at sunrise and sunset and night fishing can be more very effective. The larger, mature fish will come into shallow rock shoals and around islands to feed and many trophys have been taken still or drift fishing. Walleyes prefer clean hard bottoms and water temperature from 65 to 75 degrees. Casting, drifting, trolling and even downrigging can be effective techniques in fishing the walleye. Walleye will respond to a wide range of natural and artificial bait with live minnows and weighted jigs. Canadian Record: 22 lbs. 4 ounces.
