Ice
Fishing represents an opportunity to enjoy Nunavut's great winter
fishing.
Hardy
Canadians has been chipping holes in winter ice for centuries. The
reward: fine, healthy fish to add to the family dinner table. Today,
visitors to the Nunavut can take advantage of sunny winter and spring
days to savour this unique sport in this central arctic region.
Our
famous game Arctic Char and Lake Trout are all looking to bite this
time of year.
In the Nunavut springtime the melting snow fills thousands of small
lakes and rivers throughout the region. This archipelago of lakes
is the result of a combination of a shallow permafrost layer and an
undulating topography left by retreating glaciers. Fishing is a mainstay
for many Inuit families, and it is not uncommon to see men and women
of all ages jigging through the spring ice.
